WHAT IS MICROSOFT WORD

Microsoft word is one of the word processing packages for document preparation. That is all kinds of text preparations such as typing of letters, memo, news, etc.
the operational system of Microsoft word is very easy to learn and understand, it is one of the simplest and commonest of all the available word processing packages.
The major aspects that feature prominently in this package are:

File: The file menu command comprises the following commands:
  1. New(Ctrl+N): This is to start a new job. Ctrl+N is the alternative key command.
  2. Open (Ctrl+O): This is to open an existing or previous job.
  3. Close: This is to close the working file
  4. Save As: This is to save a new document for the first time
  5. Save: This is to save an existing job in case of power failure. Ctrl+S is the alternative of mouse usage.
  6. Page Setup: This command is to set margin, paper size, paper source and the layout for the intending document.
  7. Print Preview: This command is to preview any document before the actual printing of that document.
  8. Print: This is the command that is used to print out document in form of hard-copy. The command presents you with a dialogue box where you can select your printers number of copies and control other aspects of printing.
  9. Properties: This command consists of summary, statistic, content and custom of a job.
  10. Summary: This is a sub menu of properties that contains  information about the title of the file (file name), subject, author, manager, company, category, keywords and comments
  11. Statistics: This is a sub menu of properties that contains the data a file was created, date it was last modified, current accessing data, the date it was printed, the total edition time, number of pages, paragraphs, lines words and characters.
  12. Exist: This close your Microsoft word environment and returns you to windows program manger.
       Edit
  1. Undo(Ctrl+Z): Undoes, or reverse your most recent actions.
  2. Cut(Ctrl+X): This command move text or graphic from your document.
  3. Copy(Ctrl+C): This is used to copy the selection to the clipboard while deleting the previous content in the clipboard.
  4. Past(Ctrl+V): This command is used to insert the contents earlier cut or copied from the clipboard to your desire page or place within the document.
  5. Clear it is a command that is used in place of delete.
  6. select File(Ctrl+A): This command is used to select block the document in a file.
  7. Find (Ctrl+F): This command is used to check for a particular word or character that is/are needed is sometimes use along with find when you want to replace.

Insert:
insert is another menu command in Microsoft Word that enable us to insert page numbers, symbols, table of contents, pictures, text box, object into the current document.
  1. Break will enable us to separate the format of page numbering form one another i.e. I ii iii from 1,2,3 after this has been done, operator can the select page numbers still under insert menu command to select the actual page number format for part of the document.
  2. Page Number: It inserts numbering to any of our document, select
  3. Symbols: this command is used to insert special characters into any parts of our document. It is achieved by a simple selection of symbol under insert menu command, this action will then open another window where you can select symbol of interest.
  4. Index and Tables: This command is used to automatically insert index, table of contents, table of  figures, and table of authorities into our document.
  5. Picture: It insert a picture into your document, simply select picture  under insert menu command, this action provides another sub menu command which enables you to choose the source of the picture. For examples, it is possible to have picture or graphics in form of clip-art, in form of auto shape, Word art, and chart format.
  6. Text Box: Text box can be used to keep paragraphs and graphics together, makes text flow around other text or graphics, or print side heads and notes in the margins of a document.
  7. to move a text box and it contents, select the text box, drag it to any where in the document. It is best to work with text box in pay layout view so that you can see their actual location on the page.
Format:
it consist of the following sub menu commands:
  1. Font: It controls style of writing, text effect like blinking background, shimmer etc.
  2. Paragraph: it allows you to set paragraphing i.e. spacing between paragraphs, alignment, letter spacing, paragraph spacing, paragraph indent, rule below or above paragraph, and line spacing.
  3. Border And Shading: this command makes it possible to add a boarder to a page, paragraphs and graphics, It can also be used to add boarders in selected text or paragraph, this is achieved by simply clicking the boarder and shading on the format menu, click the shading tab, and then click the pattern style and colour and fill colour you want.
  4. Column: This is used to prepare columns for our document. It is capable of producing as many columns as the page set up of the document can take.
  5. Tab: This presents a ruler for setting tab stops and indents. The default tap stop is 1.27cm.
  6. Change Case: This is used to change the character format of a document either a lower case or upper case.
  7.  Auto Format: This automatically formats headings, boarders, numbers, symbols and so on as you are boarders, numbers, symbols and so on as you are typing your document. You can turn off the option if you don't want.
  8. Styles: This allows us to choose a style for our job. The style may be those in the template. The purpose is to enhance uniformity when working in voluminous text such as book publication.
  9. Background: This is to add different kinds of background, such as word texture to word document to make them look more interesting to printed pages of a document.
Tools
Tools menu command contains the following sub menu commands.
Spelling and Grammar: This command automatically checks spelling and grammatical errors.
Language: This lets you change the set language, it is also used to change the spelling of all of a document in another language.
Word Count: word count performs the same function as statistics. It lets you know the number of pages you have processed. the total number of words that make up the document, the number of characters (with or without spacing), the paragraphs and the total number of lines you have in a document.
Other are: Auto summaries, auto correct, track, changes, mail merges document, protect document, envelops document and labels, letter wizard, customize and option.
